A virtually impermeable barrier around a leachable waste mass can be formed by providing at least one layer of a porous material e.g. sand, around, the waste mass, and disposing two layers of interreactive substances so that their interface is within the porous layer. Through diffusion towards the interface, the substances keep reacting until an impermeable barrier is formed therebetween. An excess of both substances may be provided to ensure self-healing of the barrier should it be disrupted.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 22, 1990 and granted May 11, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 22, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 22, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
