Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method for intermittent steam injection which comprises completing wells in more than one zone and selecting a number of wells as steam injectors. As interwell communication (temperature breakthrough) develops, producers are shut-in to allow for the reservoir pressure to build up and heat to propagate from the channel of communication (e.g. fractures) to the reservoir matrix. The injection phase is followed by blowdown. Thereafter shut in, producers and, in certain other cases injectors are put on, production.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed September 27, 1990 and granted November 18, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 27, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 27, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
