Disclosure is made of a hydraulic steering unit (1) comprising a housing (2) having a pressure chamber (3) which has an aperture (22) at one end through which a rotatably mounted steering control apparatus is led to the outside and the aperture is sealed from the outside by a sealing ring (9). With a rise in pressure in the pressure chamber (3) the load on the sealing ring (9) increases and therefore so does the friction between the steering control unit (4) and the sealing ring (9). This leads to premature wear of the sealing ring. This wear is to be avoided without making the steering unit (1) too expensive.
