This invention is directed to treating the surfaces of rubber-reinforcing materials with a gas plasma of O2 and CF4 to activate the surfaces to make them more receptive to adhesives. Optionally the surfaces of the reinforcing materials may be exposed to a polymerizing gas plasma such as a thio-carbon to coat the surfaces of the reinforcing material with substances that promote adhesion to rubber. The treated surfaces have been shown to adhere directly to rubber when vulcanized in the normal fashion.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 25, 1990. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended July 25, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 25, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
