Abstract, Adiabatic mode control and structural reproducibility are achieved by a tapered semiconductor waveguide structure wherein semiconductor guiding layers are interleaved with stop-etch layers and each guiding layer extends further along the propagation axis of the waveguide further than the guiding layer immediately adjacent thereabove to create a staircase-like core or guiding structure. Cladding regions of appropriate semiconductor material having a lower index of refractionthan the tapered core structure may be added to completely surround the tapered guiding structure. The profile of the tapered structure is realizable as any desired staircase-like shape such as linear, parabolic …

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 29, 1990 and granted February 1, 1994. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 29, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 29, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
