Abstract From the Canadian patent

An optical system for measuring linear or angular displacements uses a monochromatic radiation source and an acousto-optic modulator, which acts as a Bragg modulator and is driven at a frequency which is caused periodically to vary. The modulator emits a first beam having the same wavelength as the source and a second beam whose, wavelength and emission direction vary with the modulating frequency. The second beam is collimated. For measuring angular displacements, the collimated beam is recombined with the first beam after traversing a plate with a plane parallel faces, to which plate the rotation of a moving detent is transmitted, and a photodetector generates a beat signal whose …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 27, 1990 and granted April 6, 1993. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 27, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 27, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
