Abstract From the Canadian patent

The device uses fringe laser diode anemometers which from the beams coming from one or more laser diodes for measuring, volumes made of interference fringes. The component of the relative speed of an aircraft in a direction perpendicular to the plane of these fringes is deduced from the modulation that the dust particles cause in the signal of the photodetector of each anemometer during their passage in the measuring volume of this anemometer. By joining two anemometers with the measuring volumes whose planes of the fringes are for example, orthogonal, it therefore is possible to determine two components of the relative speed vector and therefore to determine for example, this relative, …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 22, 1990 and granted August 1, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 22, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 22, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
