Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method is provided for strong base anion exchange resins containing high concentrations of pentaiodide (I5-). The resins are prepared from highly concentrated solutions of I5- and I3 - ions. The exchanged ions, such as chloride (Cl-) are washed out, of the resin after completion of the exchange reaction with the polyiodide ion mixture. The resulting product is a stable resin of predetermined I5- content which, is highly effective as a disinfectant for water acting, against water-borne bacteria, virus an Giardia.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 11, 1990 and granted July 7, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 11, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 11, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
