Abstract From the Canadian patent

A process of immobilizing environmentally noxious organic, particularly aromatic, substances by absorbing same on a layered clay mineral modified by exchange with a quaternary ammonium compound, thereby increasing the spacing between the layers and rendering the adsorption surfaces hydrophobic. After adsorption of the organic compounds the spacing between the layers of the layered clay mineral is reduced by a layer spacing reducing agent and, subsequently the clay mineral comprising the organic compounds is mixed with a hardenable inorganic binder and the whole is hardened. A typical example of a modifying agent is a quaternary ammonium compound, and of a layer spacing reducing agent an …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 11, 1990 and granted July 9, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 11, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 11, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
