Paint is sprayed in a thin line onto a fiber glass mat just prior to the mat being impregnated with hot asphalt. The temperature of the asphalt causes the paint solvent to flash the, process of which prevents the asphalt from displacing the pigment leaving the paint pigment in place in the body of the mat. A number of such lines may be formed on the mat at predetermined spaced locations to serve as installation guide lines for the roofer.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 1, 1990 and granted December 2, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 1, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 1, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
