The present invention deals with a process for sweetening a sour hydrocarbon fraction containing mercaptans. The process involves contacting the hydrocarbon fraction with a catalytic composite in the presence of an oxidizing agent ammonium, hydroxide and a quaternary ammonium salt other than hydroxide. The instant process does not use any strong base nor any alkali hydroxides to sweeten the sour hydrocarbon fraction and thus obviates waste disposal problems.

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 23, 1990 and granted June 24, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 23, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 23, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
