Tetradecene-1 can be rectified from a mixture containing 1-tetradecene and triethyl aluminum ("TEA") which has about the same normal boiling point as 1-tetradecene by conducting the distillation in a rectification column under sufficient vacuum (e.g. 5-30 torr) such that the temperature in the rectification section of the column is in the range of 200-250°F. The TEA which normally boils at about the same temperature as 1-tetradecene will exist as a dimer permitting part of the tetradecene to distill overhead and most of the TEA to exit the bottom of the column.

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 20, 1990 and granted October 12, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 20, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 20, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
