A water-soluble glass treating agent consisting of by, weight: 57 to 72% of SiO2, 19.5 to 35% of Na2O and 1.0 to 2.0% of Ag2O is disclosed. Also disclosed is a water-soluble glass treating agent further containing by weight:, 3 to 19.6% of Al2O3 in the above compositions. These glass water treating agents are free from boron constituents and function to kill or suppress bacteria and microorganisms. They are low in cost because the glass is composed principally of only three constituents. The agent which contains Al2O3 functions to increase the concentration of Ag in the glass and to decrease the deliquescent property of the glass.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 6, 1990 and granted January 4, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 6, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 6, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
