A channel sampler system, including a television signal tuner, displays an array of inset pictures on a display screen. Each inset picture is a still video picture (i.e, freeze-frame) selected by tuning each of the channels in a scan list of channels. A feedback signal is used to determine the point at which the channel is tuned at which, point a frame of video is received and stored so that the, television program sample freeze-frame image is taken from each active channel without undue delay.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 22, 1990 and granted June 1, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 22, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 22, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
