Abstract, A method is proposed for better determining the azimuth and inclination of a borehole in which a priori information regarding the magnitude of the earth's gravitational field strength it magnetic, field strength and direction are utilized to constrain the measured components of the earth's gravitational and magnetic field vectors. The constrained fit method adjusts the accelerometer and the magnetometer tri-axis measurement to optimize agreement between the measure data and the a priori magnetic and gravity field strengths and the magnetic dip angle. The adjustment that is selected is that which produces the least increase in the statistical measure X2.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 20, 1990 and granted October 12, 1993. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 20, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 20, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
