A garbage bag tie system is provided in which the ties are derived from a plastic tape which extends across the bag near to its top, and which is sealed at its ends to the side edges of the bag. The tape has a central line of weakening which allows it to be separated into two portions when the bag is to be tied. The tape normally lies flat against the outer side of the bag and does not, appreciably increase the bag thickness.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 26, 1990 and granted May 25, 1993. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 26, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 26, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
