An improved optical fiber is disclosed having particular application for use in a fiber optic communication system. The optical fiber includes an optically transparent core which is doped with a lasing material of the same type used in the diode laser transmitter of the particular communication system. The lasing dopant has the greatest density in the center of the core and is, diffused outward into an optically transparent cladding surrounding the core which has an index of refraction lower than an index of refraction of the core. The optical fiber is "pumped" such that the lasing dopant within the fiber lasesat a desired wavelength and provides gain for the original optical signal provided …

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 12, 1990 and granted November 18, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 12, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 12, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
