A method for volumetric reduction of gaseous methane to form magnesium carbide is disclosed. A mixture containing methane and magnesium oxide is reacted at a temperature of 1400 C or greater to form magnesium tricarbide and by-product gases. The carbide can be hydrolyzed to form hydrocarbons that are useful as chemical feedstocks as fuels for combustion etc. C3 hydrocarbons such as those produced by hydrolysis of magnesium tricarbide can be reacted to form benzene using a dehydrocyclization catalyst.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 5, 1990 and granted October 26, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 5, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 5, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
