Disclosed is a method for preparing a catalyst precursor for methanol synthesis using copper sulfate recovered from low-cost copper etching waste solution as the source of copper, which comprises using recovered copper sulfate containing the mother liquor in the amount of 10% by weight or less, and adding a zinc or aluminum compound and, if, necessary, further adding a boron compound to the recovered copper sulfate. A catalyst capable of developing all of the characteristics of the catalyst prepared with an expensive starting material such as the conventional metal nitrates can be prepared and the catalyst cost can be reduced to a great extent, thus giving it great industrial value.

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 28, 1989 and granted November 24, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 28, 2009.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 28, 2011.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
