The overload protector is secured between a robot arm and a tool to protect the tool from being overloaded or being forced into an abnormal position. The protector includes a housing having a cavity within which a flange is located. The tool is connected to the housing and the robot arm is connected to the flange. Air under pressure is introduced into the cavity to force the flange against a wall of the cavity. When the tool is overloaded or is moved into an abnormal position, the housing rocks with respect to the flange with resulting leakage of fluid from the cavity and a loss of pressure within the cavity. A pressure switch detects such pressure drop and deactivates the robot.

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 5, 1989 and granted May 12, 1992. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 5, 2009.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 5, 2011.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
