Abstract From the Canadian patent

A blackcurrant lipid is used in a dietetic or pharmaceutical composition to prevent the adhesion phenomena partly responsible for certain thrombo-embolic inflammatory or cancerous diseases. The role of the blackcurrant lipid is to promote the bioavailability of dihomogammalinolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid over the bioavailability of arachidonic acid.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 30, 1989 and granted July 18, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 30, 2009.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 30, 2011.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
