Abstract From the Canadian patent

An apparatus for detecting the deterioration of an engine oil including a ceramic heater radiating infrared light including infrared radiation having a wavelength of 6.1 micron meters which is equal to the specific infrared absorption peak of ester of nitric acid contained in the engine oil. The infrared light is made incident upon a photodetector via a band pass filter having a center wavelength of 6.1 micron meters to detect an amount of the ester of nitric acid contained in the engine oil. It has been experimentally confirmed that an amount of the ester of nitric acid is proportional t the total acid value which is a measure of the deterioration of the engine oil so that by, suitably …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 17, 1989 and granted July 23, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 17, 2009.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 17, 2011.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
