A device for monitoring the dispensing of drugs to a patient is disclosed. This device includes a detector which determines the actual physical delivery of the drug dosage to the patient. This eliminates ambiguities associated with devices in the art which only monitor inferentially the dispensing of the drug dosage to the patient. The means of detection can include an optical sensor which notes the physical passage of the drug dosage through a dispensing port to the patient.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 31, 1989 and granted January 30, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 31, 2009.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 31, 2011.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
