A metal matrix composite is formed by contacting a molten matrix alloy with a permeable mass of filler material or preform in the presence of an infiltrating atmosphere. Under these conditions the molten matrix alloy will, spontaneously infiltrate the permeable mass of filler material or preform under normal atmospheric pressures. Once a desired amount of spontaneous infiltration has been achieved, or during the spontaneous infiltration step the, matrix metal which has infiltrated the permeable mass of filler material or preform is directionally solidified. This technique allows the production of spontaneously infiltrated metal matrix composites having improved microstructures and …

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 13, 1989 and granted January 15, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 13, 2009.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 13, 2011.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
