In accordance with the invention a fireplace, starting apparatus is provided which includes a control valve for controlling the flow of flammable gas to a fireplace burner, with said control valve being adapted for permanent installation in a structure external of and adjacent to a fireplace. Said apparatus includes a conduit connectable at one end to a fireplace burner within the fireplace and at the other end to the control valve.
