An encryption key, required to encrypt and decrypt data according to a predefined algorithm, is usually retained in a volatile memory device. Detection of loss of the key or corruption of the key is freqeuntly possible only by means of the encryption circuit itself testing the key. Automated and repetitive testing of encryption keys by means of a processor or a control circuit periodically requesting the encryption circuit to test an encryption key minimizes data loss and system down time due to corrupted or lost keys.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 6, 1989 and granted August 30, 1994. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 6, 2009.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 6, 2011.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
