A surfactant-free aqueous polymer dispersion containing an anionic water-dispersible polyurethane and a vinyl polymer in a weight ratio of from 10:90 to 90:10, said dispersion having been obtained by: (A) forming a solution of an anionic water-dispersible isocyanale-terminated polyurethane in at least one vinyl monomer;, (B) dispersing the solution in an aqueous medium; (C) chain extending the polyurethane, and either (D) adding further vinyl monomer, and, (E) initiating polymerisation of the vinyl monomer or, (F) initiating polymerisation of the vinyl monomer and, (G) adding further vinyl monomer during polymerisation.
