A family of chlorins, a family of purpurins and metal complexes thereof are disclosed. The purpurins have the formula of Fig. 5; their metal complexes have the, formula of Fig. 1. The chlorins have the formula of Fig. 6; their metal complexes, have the formula of Fig. 2.
