An eta phase composition in powder form having a surface area greater than about 2m2/g and consisting of X6Y6Za, wherein X is at least one of Mo or W, Y is at least one of Fe, Co or Ni and up to one of Mo and W, Z is at least one of C and N and a is greater than or equal to 1 but less than or equal to 2. The eta phase may be a carbide nitride or carboni-, tride. The eta-phase composition may be used for producing or converting hydrocarbons or alcohols. This includes hydrogenation of CO to produce at least one hydrocarbon or at least one alcohol and hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and olefinic hydrocarbons. The eta-phase composition may be used in hydrocarbon …

Why it's free to use
- Granted November 15, 1994. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended November 15, 2011.
