Flow meter which is used to measure the volume flow of fluid in a pipe. A light source (e.g. a semiconductor diode laser) illuminates scattering particles suspended in the fluid. A lens images the scattered light onto a multi-element photodetector. A digital processor interfaced to the detector calculates a time-delayed spatial correlation function and hence the magnitude, and direction of the flow velocity at one or more points in the pipe.
