Abstract From the Canadian patent

A sign stand is adapted to releasably engage a support member to provide stable upright positioning of the stand. Particularly when used for outdoor signs the, invention eliminates the need for wide bases or integral heavy bases to prevent overturning due to wind forces. The sign stand comprises: securing means for securing a sign board; a support arm; and a base member and resilient detent means to engage opposing surfaces of a support member. Preferred embodiments of the invention include a sign stand adapted to releasably engage the planks of an outdoor wooden deck and a sign stand adapted to releasably engage the wall of a hollow concrete building block.
