Abstract From the Canadian patent

The substance to form lustrous carbon from residues from phenol synthesis has a softening point of approximately 100°C (Kraemer-Sarnow) and contains only very small quantities of toxicologically benign substances. It pyrolyzes evenly in the range from 200 to 800°C, forming 30 to 40%-wt of the substance that form lustrous carbon. The small phenol content is achieved by distillation-type thermal processing with the addition of a high-boiling point aromatic oil.
