In a drive mechanism for driving tape recorder reel bases wherein a mode-change lever is operated to change modes and a drive gear rotatably mounted to the change lever selectively engages one of the pair of reel bases a, reciprocating brake member in provided that is capable of engaging the reel bases in a return position to lock the reel bases.
