A brake device for producing a braking foces by pressing a friction member against a member to be braked in response to a deformation produced by applying a DC voltage to a piezoelectric element array including a stack of piezoelectric elements characterized in that a plurality of piezoelectric element arrays are coupled by a displacement transmission mechanism such that deformations produced by the piezoelectric element arrays are added together.
