Compositions having the formula XnMg(OR)2-n, in which X is chloro, bromo or iodo; R is a C1-C10 alkyl group and n is a value from about 0.2 to about 1.9 are produced by a process comprising preparing an alkanol adduct of a magnesium halide reacting the, product of this step with metallic magnesium and drying the product. The, compositions are useful as olefin polymerization catalyst oomponents and supports.
