A method for treating surfaces to destroy microorganisms including extracellular and intracellular viruses consists of applying, e.g. as an aerosol spray a liquid solution, of 0. 2% w/v of lithium dodecyl sulphate and at least 0.2% v/v of a non-ionic detergent dissolved in an ethyl alcohol to the surfaces. The method is effective against a wide range of organisms such as fungi, protozoa, chlamydia bacteria and viruses, including type 2 herpes simplex virus.
