A process of separating special steel components from the undersize fraction (smaller than a size between 12 and 25 mm) of shredder scrap. In this process the inherently nonferromagnetic special steel particles which are inherently nonferromagnetic but have been rendered sufficiently ferromagnetic during the shredding operation by a partial transformation of the austenitic structure to martensite can continuously be separated from the remaining components of the heavy fraction, such as zinc copper, brass and lead.
