A process for preparing a linear .alpha.-olefin having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms comprising polymerizing ethylene or an ethylene containing .alpha.-olefin in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a zirconium halide, an organoaluminum compound and a Lewis base in an inert solvent and terminating the polymerization by adding a catalyst deactivating agent to the resulting reaction mixture, wherein said catalyst contains a zirconium component comprising a zirconium halide represented by formula (I):, ZrXaA4-a (I), wherein X and A may be the same or different and each represents chloride, bromide atom or iodide and a is 0 or an integer of 1-4; an aluminum component comprising an alkylaluminum …
