A stretcher for mounting upon an elongated backboard for supporting and immobilizing a person. The stretcher has an elongated envelope adapted to enclose a rigidifying backboard having a longitudinal centerline and opposite side edges. A retainer extends longitudinally of and is attached to one side of the envelope adjacent the longitudinal centerline at longitudinally spaced apart locations to define unattached sections of the retainer. A plurality of transverse straps extend through the unattached sections. The transverse straps are of lesser widths than the sections.
