Abstract From the Canadian patent

The postage meter includes a gear in driving communication with a print drum and a shutter bar receivable in an aperture of the gear. The shutter bar has a release position enabling the gear to cause driving of the print drum. The gear aperture is sized to permit a predetermined amount of gear rotation prior to encountering the then resident shutter bar. A control means is included for simultaneously actuating the gear drive means and the shutter from the aperture resident position upon initiation of a postage meter print cycle.
