A novel asymmetric 1,1-dichloro-1,2,2-trimethyl-2-phenyldisilane of the formula (I), (C6H5)(CH3)2SiSi(CH3)Cl2 is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method for producing dichloro-1,2,2-trimethyl-2-phenyldisilane by reacting 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trimethyldisilane of the formula (III) Cl(CH3)2SiSi(CH3)C12, with a phenyl magnesium halide of the general formula (IV), C6H5MgX (X = halogen atom) in the presence of a transition metal (except for cobalt) catalyst.
