A speech coding transmission equipment distinguishing whether a speech signal is in a voiced speech or an unvoiced speech period, and when the speech signal is in a voiced speech period, compressing and expanding, in the time domain, the speech signal using a pitch period of the speech signal, and when the speech signal is in an unvoiced speech period compressing and, expanding, in the time domain the speech signal using a, sample period in the equipment thus carrying out an, appropriate time domain harmonic compression and expansion of the speech signal and increasing the clarity of the reproduced speech as a whole.
