A control method controls a belt-and-pulley type continuously variable transmission having drive and driven pulleys mounted respectively on input and output shafts a, V-belt trained around the drive and driven pulleys and an, oil pressure source and an oil reservoir operatively coupled to first and second hydraulic pressure chambers for axially moving the movable conical members of the drive and driven pulleys to vary effective diameters of the drive and driven pulleys for thereby controlling a speed ratio.
