Smelting is effected in a reactor containing juxtaposed oxidizing and reducing zones each containing a slag bath and a gas space above the bath. The slag baths and gas spaces of the two zones respectively communicate with each other. The ores to be smelted are fed into the slag bath in the oxidizing zone and an oxygen-containing gas is blown into this slag bath. The slag which is formed in the oxidizing zone and is rich in non-ferrous metal oxides is passed from this oxidizing zone into the reducing zone.
