An apparatus for releasably maintaining a toilet seat in a generally vertical position comprises a mounting member adapted to be secured to the toilet tank in a position to engage a toilet seat and maintain the same when moved to a general vertical orientation. According to one embodiment, a hook is forced upwardly due to movement of the toilet seat to the vertical position and, is positioned outwardly at the tank to allow the seat and toilet cover to move past the hook which then maintains these in the vertical position.
