Abstract of the Disclosure, In accordance with the present invention a container, for heating a foodstuff or other material in a microwave oven is provided with a mechanism for generating at least one higher order mode of microwave energy to give more even or a particular desired distribution of heating. This result can be achieved by a stepped structure protruding into or out of the container from a surface thereof, usually the bottom surface, or by a dielectric wall structure that comprises at least two contiguous dielectric wall portions of respectively different electrical thickness.
