A brewing machine for tea or coffee which has a filter vessel and an intermediate storage vessel for storing brewing water. The intermediate storage vessel has a siphon for emptying the brewing water stored in the intermediate storage vessel into the filter vessel. The siphon has an outlet pipe, which passes through a drainage opening in the intermediate storage vessel and an outer, peripheral seal. The outlet pipe is movable by means of a pivoted lever from a first position in which the peripheral seal engages and seals the drainage opening to a second position in which the drainage opening is opened for flow of the brewing water through it.
