Cardiac Valve Prosthesis, The mechanical cardiac valve prostheses used conventionally comprise a tiltable valvular closing body pivotally supported in a valve ring (10) whose shape is substantially determined by the closing geometry of the closing body. Due to the shape of the inner face of the valve ring, vortices may develop in flowing blood which, at the boundary of the discharged jet, may reduce the blood velocity in flow direction on the one hand, and which may favor thrombus formation and blood damaging shearing stress on the other hand. The flow resistance caused by the valve ring is relatively high due to the occurring flow separation in the valve ring and the resultant jet …

Why it's free to use
- Granted March 10, 1992. A Canadian patent filed before October 1, 1989 lasted 17 years from grant, so its term ended March 10, 2009.
