The invention has a metal tube of any desired length made from one thermocouple element material. A travelling arm terminating in spring contacts moves axially through the length of the tube, and is made from the other thermocouple element material, thereby creating a thermocouple junction. Electrical connections from the tube and travelling arm complete the thermocouple circuit and thus provide the temperature at a meter or chart recorder. The travelling arm can be marked and a suitable pointer used to provide an indication of the location of the spring contacts and thus thermocouple junction.
