Erythromycin A derivatives of the formula: (3), (wherein:, R is hydroyen or (C2-C4)alkanoyl; R1 and R2 are taken separately, R1 is hydxoxymethyl and R2 is hydroxy; or, R1 and R2 are taken together and are methylene; and R3 and R4 are taken separately and are each hydrogen; or, R3 and R4 are taken together and are thiocarbonyl; with the proviso that when R3 and R4 are so taken R is other, than hydrogen);, and their pharmaceutical acceptable acid addition salts are antibacterial and useful as active ingredients of pharmaceuticals.
